Hot Rising Companies For 2015

As the good old days of low-maintenance bond allocations fade from memory, financial advisers are being forced to learn how to be more creative and nimble when navigating the new reality of fixed-income markets.

“For the first time in my career, I'm very nervous about making sure our clients are protected, should interest rates start rising,” said Bruce Allen, president of Bruce G. Allen Investments.

The problem is complex: With bonds in the dumps, many advisers are cutting their clients' allocations to fixed income. But they have to figure out where to put that money, because it isn't a slam-dunk “toss it into stocks” decision.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Exchange-traded funds offer a convenient way to invest in sectors or niches that interest you. If you'd like to add some large-cap stocks to your portfolio but don't have the time or expertise to hand-pick a few, the Vanguard Large-Cap ETF (NYSEMKT: VV  ) could save you a lot of trouble. Instead of trying to figure out which large-cap stocks will perform best, you can use this ETF to invest in lots of them simultaneously.

    The basics
ETFs often sport lower expense ratios than their mutual-fund cousins. This ETF, focused on large-cap stocks, sports a relatively low expense ratio -- an annual fee -- of 0.1%. It yields about 2%.

This ETF has performed reasonably, but it's also very young, with just a few years on the books. It underperformed the S&P 500 in 2008 and 2010, though it beat it substantially in 2007 and 2009. As with most investments, of course, we can't expect outstanding performances in every quarter or year. Investors with conviction need to wait for their holdings to deliver.

While small cap green or renewable energy type of stocks have been the flavor of the month for many stock promoters (and sometimes still are), small cap health care stocks like PPJ Enterprise (OTCMKTS: PPJE), Plantation Development Corp (OTCMKTS: BRMA) and MedCAREERS Group Inc (OTCMKTS: MCGI) have also started to get some notice lately perhaps because Obamacare has been topping the news lately. However, are these small cap health care stocks a better bet for investors or for their promoters? Here is a quick reality check and a checkup:

    The real pain
The titanium dioxide business was the biggest drag for DuPont last year, as demand for the pigment, which is used primarily in paints, softened globally. This year has been encouraging so far, with most TiO2 producers witnessing an uptick in the demand for the pigment. While DuPont reported an 8% sequential rise in TiO2 sales volumes during its first quarter, Huntsman (NYSE: HUN  ) saw its first-quarter TiO2 volumes rise 27%sequentially. Furthermore, Huntsman scaled down production during the quarter to reduce inventory, and feelsthat a better balance between demand and supply should help the industry bounce back during the second half of the year.

Earnings struck again Wednesday, with net income falling at both orthopedics player Stryker (NYSE: SYK  ) and heart-product maker Edwards Lifesciences (NYSE: EW  ) .

Walking the fine line of full-time employment
If middle-class individuals were working full time, this might not be as much of a problem, but job and hour cuts stemming from the upcoming implementation of Obamacare are becoming all too common. Surgical device maker Stryker (NYSE: SYK  ) -- which would be expected to pay higher wages because of the specialization often required to work in the health care industry -- let go of 5% of its workforce in direct response to the higher costs associated with the PPACA and its 2.3% medical device excise tax.
