Mead Johnson Shares Plunge After Baby Formula Pulled

Mead Johnson Nutrition (MJN) shares fell 15% in midday trading after Wal-Mart (WMT) pulled a batch of the company’s Enfamil baby formula following the death of an infant who had eaten the formula.

The baby, who lived in Missouri, tested positive for Cronobacter, a bacteria that is extremely dangerous to babies. Mead Johnson said that the batch of formula had tested negative when it was produced and packaged, Bloomberg reported.

Health officials will test the formula that the baby used, and look for other possible sources of bacteria, including the water used to mix it.

Enfamil and related brands make up for 69% of Mead Johnson’s revenue, Bloomberg notes.
