Investors tend to like large cap stocks because they are companies and brands that they know, but that doesn't mean that all large cap companies are good buys. They ebb and flow like any other investment. Sometimes they lose investors small fortunes, but other times they can earn terrific sums. One way investors can tell which stocks are on the rise is to look at their earnings forecasts. A company that analysts predict will increase its earnings or sales significantly has a much better chance of doing so than a company analysts predict will lose money.
